What the numbers mean

DownloadHow fast data reaches you. This is the number that matters for streaming, browsing and downloads. Compare it against your plan speed.
UploadHow fast data leaves you. Matters for video calls, sending photos and cloud backups.
PingRound-trip delay to our network. Lower is better; under 50 ms is comfortable for video calls and gaming.
JitterHow much the ping varies. Low jitter keeps calls from breaking up.

Getting an accurate reading

  • Use a device plugged in with an Ethernet cable if you can, because Wi-Fi is usually the bottleneck rather than the line
  • Stop streaming, downloads and game updates on other devices first
  • Close other browser tabs, especially anything playing video
  • Run it two or three times and take the best result
  • Speeds naturally dip a little during busy evening hours
  • Fixed wireless can slow in heavy rain, wet snow or blowing dust, so retest once it clears
